The Independent Spirit Awards honor films whose funding comes at least in part from sources outside of the major Hollywood studios.
Winners were chosen by the 9,000-member nonprofit Independent Feature Project/Los Angeles, which includes actors, directors, writers and other industry professionals.
Other films competing for the Best Documentary honors were "Bright Leaves", "Chisholm '72: Unbought & Unbossed", "Hiding and Seeking: Faith and Tolerance After the Holocaust" and "Tarnation".
"Metallica: Some Kind of Monster" documents the turbulent making of METALLICA's last album, "St. Anger". "Some Kind of Monster" also resulted in a book, "Metallica: This Monster Lives", written by co-director Joe Berlinger.
METALLICA are currently taking time off but hope to begin working on a new album later this year.
